With the maturing mobile market, the major networks cannot afford to give mobile phones away for FREE. Just look how much a new mobile phone model costs on a 'Pay as you go' tariff!
Therefore, most networks offer older models and include these costs in the line rental price of their 'Pay Monthly' packages. To find out how much you are paying for the 'FREE' mobile phone, check how much the package would cost with the SIM only option (if available).
This can be highlighted by BT Mobile Home Plans. They offer the following 'voice options' - 0*, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 or 1000 minutes per month. You can also select the most suitable 'Text options' - 0, 50, 100, 200, 400 per month. The voice minutes/texts can be shared by up to 6 users, with each additional user paying £10/month line rental (including a choice of 'FREE' handsets) or £5/month for the SIM only option.
So although you get a FREE handset, you are actually paying at least £60 for the mobile, as with the SIM only option (i.e. keep your existing mobile), you save £5/month, which adds up to £60 for the minimum contract period of 1 year, and even more if you do not terminate the contract at this time.
* With this option you MUST choose at least 50 texts/month
