Pay Upfront (One-Year Packages)

The purchase price includes the cost of the mobile phone, connection charges, line rental together with a certain amount of free inclusive calls for a twelve-month period.


Advantages:

 
  • Calls made once you have exceeded your free inclusive monthly calls tend to be charged at a far more reasonable rate than pre-pay mobiles
  • You can guarantee to make & receive calls for 12 months
  • Packages often include free monthly calls
  • There is a 14-day return policy
  • No hassle of purchasing 'top up' voucher

Disadvantages:

 
  • There is a high initial outlay as you pay all costs for year upfront
  • You may be required to set-up a Direct Debit for any calls above your free inclusive ones
  • Not available to under 18's
  • A credit check is required, although this is relatively simple
  • Not all tariffs are available
  • It is difficult to change tariffs within the first 12 months

Pay As You Go Tariffs

Pre-pay offers a very simple way of purchasing a mobile phone, as everything that you need comes in a box and requires no paperwork to be completed. Typically prices start from around £40.

  • No 12 month minimum term contract
  • No credit checks required

Disadvantages:

 
  • Limited choice of telephones
  • High initial purchase cost of the mobile
  • Inconvenience of needing to purchase 'top-up' vouchers
  • You cannot make calls if you have no credit
  • The cost of calls tends to be high, so anything more than 'occasional use' will be relatively expensive
  • The mobile will not have all the network features that are available on other tariffs
  • Mobile must be used every 180 days (depending on network)
